LSIP-funded Systems Engineering pilot opening pathways into engineering careers

A new Systems Engineering programme is helping local residents take their first steps into the engineering sector, thanks to support through the LSIP.

A new Systems Engineering programme delivered by the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy (NCfN&CE) is helping local residents take their first steps into the engineering sector, thanks to support through the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP).

The Level 2 Systems Engineering course is delivered as an evening programme, designed to make learning accessible for those balancing other commitments. The pilot cohort includes nine learners from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The free programme introduces participants to core engineering principles through hands-on experience in:

  • Computing and programming
  • Electronics
  • Robotics and automation
  • Systems thinking and problem-solving

Alongside technical skills, learners develop key employability attributes including teamwork, professional conduct and analytical thinking — all essential for entering or progressing within the engineering industry.

The programme has been designed to widen access to the sector, supporting individuals who may not have formal qualifications, are currently unemployed, or are seeking to retrain from other industries.

Dr Donna Connor, Managing Director of the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy, said:

“It’s inspiring to see such a diverse group of learners taking their first steps toward understanding what a career in engineering involves.

We’re proud to offer opportunities that support individuals who want to enter the industry, whether they’re without formal qualifications, currently unemployed, or working in completely different sectors.”

As part of the wider skills pipeline, the College is also piloting a Level 3 Robotics course, further strengthening progression routes into advanced technical careers and supporting long-term workforce development across the clean energy and engineering sectors.

This activity has been supported through the Cumberland Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), funded by Cumberland Council, helping address employer-identified skills needs and strengthen the region’s engineering and clean energy workforce.
