Armstrong Watson celebrates the people behind more than 150 years of success

Armstrong Watson has been selected as one of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce’s Business Heroes, celebrating the Chamber’s 25th anniversary.

The campaign shines a spotlight on Chamber members from across the county. This isn’t a definitive list – there are many other great businesses we could have included – but a celebration of just some our many fantastic members making a difference to Cumbria.

Founded in Carlisle in 1867 by James Watson, Armstrong Watson has grown from a local accountancy practice into one of the largest independent firms of accountants, business advisers and financial planners in the North of England and Scotland.

Today, the firm employs more than 800 people across multiple locations, supporting business owners, private individuals, families, charities and organisations with everything from audit and tax to financial planning, transactions and specialist business advice.

Despite its growth, the firm’s purpose remains simple: helping clients achieve prosperity, a secure future and peace of mind.

The business has continued to evolve alongside its clients, embracing technological transformation, AI and automation while expanding its specialist services and growing through both organic development and acquisitions.

But Armstrong Watson says its greatest achievement is the business it has built for its people.

Recent recognition as one of the UK’s Sunday Times Best Places to Work reflects the firm’s focus on culture, wellbeing, development and opportunity. More than 140 apprentices are also developing their careers with the business, helping create the next generation of advisers and business leaders.

“We are proud to be independently owned, which allows us to take a long-term view and focus on what is right for our clients and our team,” Armstrong Watson said.

Its values of Passion, Trust, Humanity and Honesty underpin that approach, with the firm aiming to build long-term relationships where clients see its people not simply as advisers, but as trusted partners.

That commitment extends into the communities Armstrong Watson serves. Its teams support charities, schools, community organisations and local initiatives, while helping businesses grow, create jobs and contribute to vibrant local economies.

Looking ahead, Armstrong Watson has ambitious plans to continue investing in its people, technology and client experience while strengthening its position as a leading adviser to privately owned businesses across the North.

In 2027, the firm will celebrate its 160th anniversary with its “160 Years With You” campaign, celebrating the people, clients, communities and relationships that have shaped its story since 1867.

For Armstrong Watson, its Cumbrian roots remain central to its identity.

“We are proud of our Cumbrian roots and proud to be members of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce,” the firm said. “The Chamber plays an important role in bringing businesses together, championing the region and creating opportunities for collaboration.”
