Sealy UK has been named among Cumbria Chamber of Commerce’s 25 Business Heroes, marking the Chamber’s 25th anniversary and celebrating the contribution of businesses across the county.

The campaign shines a spotlight on Chamber members from across the county. This isn’t a definitive list – there are many other great businesses we could have included – but a celebration of just some our many fantastic members making a difference to Cumbria.

Based in Aspatria, West Cumbria, Sealy UK is one of the country’s leading bed and mattress manufacturers. Established 52 years ago, the business combines generations of Cumbrian manufacturing expertise with a global brand heritage stretching back more than 140 years to Sealy’s beginnings in Texas.

The business supplies national and independent retailers, online businesses and the hospitality sector, including hotels across Cumbria. Its products are developed around three principles: genuine support, true comfort and dependable durability.

Sealy UK’s journey has not been without challenges. In 2020, the future of its Aspatria factory was uncertain, with the site threatened with closure. Under new ownership, the business has since been revitalised, with renewed investment in its people, products, brand and manufacturing capabilities.

Today, the business is focused on growth, moving the Sealy brand towards the premium end of the market and creating new opportunities with premium retailers and luxury hotels.

A particular source of pride is that this evolution is being driven by the skilled Cumbrian team. Sealy recently showcased new ranges at the National Bed Show in Telford, receiving an encouraging response as it continues to develop products and strengthen its position in the market.

Sealy’s science-led approach to sleep also sets it apart, with research, testing and engineering informing product development.

Beyond manufacturing, the business makes a positive contribution to West Cumbria through employment opportunities across manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing and product development, while supporting a wider supply chain.

Sealy UK also partners with Sleep Patrol, a Carlisle-based initiative tackling bed poverty. The business donates mattresses and other bed products returned through customer trial schemes, allowing them to be redistributed free of charge to people in need. By June 2025, the initiative had supported 250 households and distributed more than 670 bed items.

Looking ahead, Sealy UK plans to continue investing in innovation and manufacturing, expanding its presence in premium retail and hospitality while securing the long-term future of its Cumbrian operations.
