Oxley Group named a Cumbria Business Hero as Ulverston engineering firm takes Cumbrian innovation to the world

Oxley has been selected as one of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce’s Business Heroes, celebrating the Chamber’s 25th anniversary.

The campaign shines a spotlight on Chamber members from across the county. This isn’t a definitive list – there are many other great businesses we could have included – but a celebration of just some our many fantastic members making a difference to Cumbria.

Founded more than 80 years ago by Freddy Oxley, the company has grown into a world-leading designer and manufacturer of advanced LED lighting, night vision and infrared technology for the global defence and aerospace sectors.

From its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Ulverston, Oxley supports some of the world’s leading defence organisations, including Boeing, BAE Systems, Saab, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics. Its products are used on some of the world’s most advanced military platforms, helping customers improve operational effectiveness, safety and survivability.

Despite its global reach, Oxley remains proudly rooted in Ulverston. The company now exports to 34 countries and has secured positions on major international defence programmes, including South Korea’s KF-21 fighter aircraft programme, where Oxley is one of only three UK companies selected to support the next-generation combat aircraft.

The company’s growth has been supported by significant investment in its people, facilities and technology, including more than £2 million invested in its Ulverston site.

Oxley has also developed an award-winning four-day working week, helping attract and retain talented employees while supporting wellbeing and productivity.

“Our success is driven by a talented team of people who combine engineering excellence, customer focus and a passion for innovation,” said CEO Darren Cavan. “There is a real sense of pride in knowing that products designed and manufactured in Ulverston are making a difference on a global stage.”

That commitment to people extends beyond the business. Oxley is a founding member and Chair of the Furness Education and Skills Partnership, working with 52 schools and more than 100 partner organisations to support skills development across the region.

The company also co-founded UlverSTEM, helping inspire tens of thousands of young people through hands-on STEM activities, while its employees volunteer as STEM Ambassadors.

Oxley’s contribution to its community was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the company rapidly adapted its manufacturing operations to produce thousands of protective face visors for frontline healthcare workers, hospitals, care homes and emergency services, free of charge.

Looking ahead, Oxley is focused on sustainable growth, with opportunities in international markets including the Nordic region and the United States. It is also continuing to invest in new technologies, including its low-signature infrared technology, designed to reduce detectability while maintaining operational effectiveness.

As a business with more than 80 years of history in Ulverston, Oxley remains committed to showing what Cumbrian engineering can achieve on the world stage.

“Invest in your people,” is the company’s advice to other businesses. “When you create a culture where people can thrive, business performance follows.”
