Cumbria Chamber brings community together for sustainable fashion event

Cumbria Chamber of Commerce is set to host a special event, ‘Styled with Purpose – Behind the Seams’, exploring sustainability

Cumbria Chamber of Commerce is set to host a special event, ‘Styled with Purpose – Behind the Seams’, exploring sustainability, style and the impact of clothing choices, proudly sponsored by professional services business Knights. Taking place on Thursday, 20th November, the event will bring together local people and businesses to spark conversations around clothing waste and personal style.

The event will feature insights from two inspiring speakers. Gail Gravett, founder of Cumbria Clothing Collective CIC, will take audiences ‘Behind the Seams’ of the fashion industry, highlighting the scale of clothing waste in the UK and Cumbria and how her organisation is working to tackle the issue one item at a time.

Gail established the Collective in January 2025 after seeing the devastating images of discarded clothing in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Alongside her work with the CIC, she has supported hundreds of businesses across the county as a business adviser and mentor with Cumbria Chamber.

Also speaking is Carole Greenland, founder of Wardrobe Wake-Up, who will demonstrate how understanding personal style can reduce unnecessary purchases and promote a more sustainable approach to fashion. A trained image consultant with more than 20 years’ experience, Carole helps people to align their wardrobes with their lifestyle and personality, ensuring clothes both flatter and last.

The event’s aim is to raise awareness of the environmental impact of clothing waste in Cumbria, and to help individuals and businesses to take small, meaningful actions towards a more sustainable future.

Suzanne Caldwell, Managing Director at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said:
“Clothing touches every part of our lives, yet the environmental impact is often hidden. This event is about celebrating the community spirit we have in Cumbria while also shining a light on how we can all make more conscious choices. It promises to be an inspiring day, and we look forward to welcoming everyone who attends.”

Caroline Rayner, Partner at Knights, added:
“Knights is proud to be supporting an event that brings the community together to discuss such an important topic. Cumbria has always been a place where collaboration and innovation thrive, and this event is another great example of how people here are driving positive change.”

Attendance is open to all, with a focus on the local business community and individuals with an interest in learning more about sustainable fashion. Tickets are available at £15 + VAT for Chamber members and £25 + VAT for non-members.
