BAE Apprentice case study: Rose Bradley

Earlier this year Kevin Warman met Rose Bradley and discussed her journey into her new role and the hard work and determination which got her there.

Earlier this year, Kevin Warman LSIP Engagement Manager at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce met with Rose Bradley, an apprentice at BAE Systems, at Portland Square in Barrow. They discussed her journey into her new role and the hard work and determination which got her there.

Rose’s journey wasn’t without challenges. After leaving Furness College in 2011, where she was studying a BTEC in Health and Social Care, she pursued adult nursing. However, home pressures prevented her from finishing the course. Despite this setback, Rose continued to work in local care services.

In 2016, Rose and her partner welcomed their first child. By 2020, their relationship had ended, leaving Rose raising two young children during the challenging COVID-19 years. She juggled caregiving duties and work while seeking ways to build a better future for herself and her children.

Rose enrolled in a Business Administration and Management (NCFE) course and successfully passed. She also studied Level 2 Maths and English with PHX Training, both of which were essential qualifications for her next big step.

With encouragement from her father and support from PHX Training, Rose applied for an apprenticeship with BAE Systems—a year earlier than she had planned! PHX Training provided invaluable assistance, from helping with her CV and interview preparation to offering practical support like access to a computer and flexible scheduling to accommodate her busy life.

In 2023, Rose achieved her Level 2 Maths and English qualifications and was accepted into the BAE Systems apprenticeship program. She is now one month into her two-year Intermediate Apprenticeship in Submarines Ancillary Lifting Manufacturing Support.

Balancing her responsibilities, Rose works shifts opposite her ex-husband, making childcare arrangements much more manageable. Though her children initially needed time to adjust, everything is falling into place.

Rose is now looking ahead, planning a brighter future for her family, including a dream trip to Disneyland. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and the support available through organizations like PHX Training.

If you’re inspired by Rose’s story, know that support is out there. Organizations like PHX Training can provide the tools and encouragement you need to achieve your goals, allowing you to take that first step towards a fulfilling career.
