Cumbria Chamber’s Directors Forum (sponsored by Muckle LLP) met for its third event of the year yesterday at the award-winning Yan at Broadrayne. The theme of the event was sustainability, with talks from Tony McPhillips of Muckle LLP and Co-founder of the Yan Jess Manley.
Situated just outside Grasmere, the Yan at Broadrayne is a boutique hotel and bistro on a 17th century converted sheep farm. Guests gathered for welcome drinks in the bistro before listening to Jess’s talk on the business’s sustainability work, which had been recognised the night before at the VisitEngland Awards where they’d picked up a Bronze award in the Ethical Tourism category!
In a thought-provoking and engaging talk, Jess covered the steps the business takes to reduce carbon emissions. For example, significantly reducing food waste by encouraging customers to pre-order at busy times; recycling unused ingredients, e.g. using lemon rind to make limoncello; calculating and recording the carbon emissions for each dish on the menu which lets guests make the most sustainable choice; and focussing on local produce and seasonal ingredients.
The guests also heard from Tony McPhillips on how Muckle LLP, a firm which approaching its two-year anniversary of opening its Cumbrian hub, works to become more socially and environmentally sustainable. On the environmental side, the firm takes steps to reduce gas usage and cuts down on paper waste and staff travel. In terms of social sustainability, the firm’s initiatives include the Muckle Community Fund (with over £670,000 donated to charities and organisations), undertaking pro-bono work for charities and encouraging staff to volunteer. Tony also discussed and answered questions on the firm’s B Corp Certification which recognises its commitment to sustainability. The firm is no stranger to awards, with recent accolades including Investors in people Platinum and North East Business of the Year.
After the talks, lively and engaging discussions continued around the theme of sustainability over a delicious meal provided by the Yan.
